Bulletproof Foundation for Your Ford 9 Inch Build

Start your 9 Inch axle build with a strong foundation. Our all-new, redesigned Ford 9 Inch center sections are stronger than factory Ford carriers and fit into most Ford 9 Inch axle housings (car/truck/van).  Standard 3.062” differential carrier bearings fit this center section, allowing the use of 28, 31 or 33-spline axle shafts.

When it comes to strength, versatility and ease-of-service, the Ford 9 Inch is unmatched. The front-loaded third member (“pumpkin”) is easily removed for gear changes or service. Ford took a good design and improved it to handle the demands of NASCAR and NHRA drag racing in the 1960’s by introducing carriers made of nodular (ductile) iron. These “N” cases offered more strength than traditional “gray” iron and withstood higher shock loads delivered by the new, high-horsepower engines – with less gear deflection and less chance of failure. The N case was the choice of Ford’s HiPo offerings like 406 Galaxies, 427 Fairlanes, “Drag Pack” 428 Cobra Jets, and Boss 429 Mustangs.

NEW, Redesigned and Reinforced Nodular Iron Housing

While original Ford N cases are still great, they’re getting hard to find. Ordinary Ford carriers, such as casting C7AW-E shown on this page, are made from grey cast iron which is brittle. This makes them more likely to crack and subsequently fail when subjected to high loads. We’ve put decades of experience to work, correcting these deficiencies in this popular axle platform. In fact, our carrier has already been proven on both dirt and asphalt tracks across America.

Our Ford 9 Inch carrier is a NEW casting with over 4 lbs. of material added in critical areas. Extra ribbing reinforces the case and rearmost pinion support (pilot bearing). Thick, forged steel bearing caps surround the carrier bearings, all securely held in place with Grade 8 cap screws. The improvements continue with rugged billet steel adjuster nuts and heavy-duty keepers to ensure your ring gear settings are maintained. All mounting surfaces are precision machined to ensure a consistent, flat surface for a positive gasket seal (no more leaks on your shop floor). An oil fill plug is included.

Works with OEM and Aftermarket Ford 9 Inch Axle Housings

Best of all, our nodular Ford 9 Inch carriers work with both OEM and aftermarket 9 Inch axle housings. The 3.062″ carrier bearing size supports 28, 31 or 33-spline axle shafts. The carrier accepts gears up to 5.43:1 ratio without any internal clearancing (and up to 7.33:1 with some minor grinding). Speaking of gears, be sure to cap your new gear set with our nodular iron Daytona pinion bearing support. This rugged unit is cast from the same material as the carrier and features big diameter bearings, ensuring there are no weak links in your driveline combination.

  • Fits both OEM and aftermarket Ford 9 inch axle housings
  • Use 3.062” O.D. carrier bearing (factory Ford “big bearing” carrier)
  • Works with 28, 31 or 33-spline axle shafts (with proper bearing)
  • Nodular iron material has more desirable grain structure to resist fractures
  • Withstands higher shock loads & is more resistant to fatigue than gray iron castings
  • Housing is reinforced in many areas (extra ribbing, thicker bulkheads, bearing support webbing)
  • Casting weighs 29.7 lbs. (4 lbs. more than ordinary Ford C7AW-E carriers)
  • Additional “pilot” pinion support webbing, addressing a weak point on factory castings
  • Accepts gears up to 5.43:1 (up to 7.33:1 with minor grinding)
  • Precision milled mounting surfaces to stop leaks on your shop floor
  • Forged steel bearing caps are secured with Grade 8 1/2”-13 cap screws
  • Billet steel adjuster nuts and heavy duty keepers maintain critical gear tooth settings
  • Accepts standard 9” & Daytona pinion bearing supports
  • Oil fill hole in factory location for easy service
  • IMCA approved

DAYTONA NODULAR PINION SUPPORT

“Daytona” pinion bearing supports use larger bearings and strengthen a known weak point on Ford 9-inch axle assemblies. Designed by Ford in the 1960’s to take the punishment of NASCAR racing, the larger bearings of the Daytona pinion support significantly reduce pinion gear deflection to improve durability. Gear deflection occurs when the pinion shaft moves out of alignment under heavy loads, causing the tooth contact pattern to change. Reduced tooth contact (under heavy load) with the ring gear typically leads to catastrophic axle failure.

Daytona pinion bearings are set up differently than traditional Ford 9-Inch pinions you’ll find under most cars, trucks, and vans (but they’ll easily adapt to all of them). By using bearing spacers with shims rather than a traditional crush sleeve, the solid spacer and shim pack won’t deform under load. This maintains critical depth settings which helps preserve that important tooth contact pattern.  Plus, this set-up makes gear ratio swaps, yoke upgrades and third-member rebuilds much easier. Just re-insert the shims and torque the pinion nut to set pinion depth! Fits all 1.218” 28-spline Ford 9-inch pinion gears.

The benefits of Daytona bearing retainers don’t end there. Our Daytona pinion support features a beefed-up nodular iron housing. Nodular iron, also known as ductile iron, has greater tensile strength and is less prone to fracturing than ordinary “gray” cast iron. Plus, larger oiling channels ensure more gear oil flows across the bearing, extending bearing life. Milled gasket surfaces ensure a leak-free seal.

Whether you’re upgrading an OEM Ford 9-inch or building a stout rear end from the ground up, don’t take shortcuts! Improve reliability and longevity with a nodular iron Daytona pinion bearing support.

  • Increases durability and strengthens a known weak point in Ford 9-inch axle assemblies
  • Larger bearing adds strength, reduces gear deflection in high horsepower/torque applications
  • Uses bearing spacer/shim combo in place of the crush sleeve
  • Makes third member rebuilds, gear changes and yoke changes much easier
  • Nodular (ductile) iron housing is stronger than “gray” iron and less prone to fractures
  • 5.85 lb. casting is heavier and better reinforced than OEM Ford retainers
  • Bigger oiling channels extend bearing life
  • Milled gasket surfaces for a leak-free seal
  • Works on all standard 28-spline 1.218” Ford 9-inch pinion gears
  • Easy upgrade for all OEM Ford 9-Inch third member carriers
  • Bearings, races, spacers, and shims sold separately

FULL SPOOL

Durable CNC Machined Steel Full Spools

For the ultimate in competition traction at the best value, nothing beats our machined steel full spools in your Ford 9 inch rear end. Stronger and lighter than a mini spool setup, and a better support for the ring gears–we offer these durable premium steel CNC-machined spools in Standard and Lightweight configurations.

CNC machined steel guarantees a precise fit and extreme strength without unnecessary weight. The standard weight spool is the choice for extreme use on the strip and high horsepower/torque applications, and weighs is 8.7 lbs in 28-spline configuration and 8.0 pounds in 31-spline.

Lightweight Version Available

We also offer lightweight spools for the perfect combination of low-weight and strength. Excellent for dirt-track applications, the lightweight spools reduce rotating weight to reduce the spin-up time to maximum RPM and they reduce unsprung weight. The lightweight steel spool weighs 6.2 lbs. in 28-spline and 6.1 lbs. in 31-spline.

Compare these to the nearly 14 lb. setup used in stock carrier with mini spool configurations and you quickly see the advantage of our full spools.

Both spools use 1.781” I.D. carrier bearings, such as those in our overhaul kits.

Get durable yet lightweight full spool traction for your Ford 9 inch rear end at a great value with our machined steel full spools.
